Happy Anniversary

This is a picture of my parents, Dwayne and Sharon…..they are holding one of their 6 GREAT-Grandchildren!! you read that correctly!! GREAT-Grandchildren!

Dwayne and Sharon are the parents of 4 daughters, grandparents to 12 and great-grandparents to 6…and counting… They are nothing if not family oriented and that is exactly what they have created at their family restaurant McJacs Roadhouse Grille.

Today is the 10th Anniversary of this venture of their life. I say life as owning and running a restaurant becomes your life …. 24/7 …. Every inch and corner of the Restaurant IS my parents. The menu is their taste…some of the recipe’s are even my moms and grandmothers! The style is all my dad with my mom thrown in here and there.

It is more than a restaurant, it is a family restaurant that is an experience!

There are definitely challenges and we don’t always get it right ALL the time…but we do put our best foot forward every time and I have to say…. we love what we do.

Congratulations mom and dad…. we, your girls and your staff…we are so very proud of you and glad you decided to do this crazy venture 10 years ago!!

Local Supporting Local….

From my family to yours…Happy Holidays!

Passing it on

The following is an email I received this morning and being a BC Canadian girl with an entrepunuer family and business I have to say I agree with the sentiment of buying and supporting local.. I do not agree with the vibe of Anti-Chinese tone that is throughout the text as I believe there is more than enough to go around…but owning a local BC business I feel the frustration of the super box stores that have purchasing power way beyond my reach and while everyone watches their bottom line it would be nice to throw as much business to the locals as we can!

Christmas 2011 — Birth of a New Tradition

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Canadians with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods –  merchandise that has been produced at the expense of Canadian labor. This year will be different. This year Canadians will give the gift of genuine concern for other Canadians. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by Canadians hands. Yes there is!

It’s time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

Everyone — yes

EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local Canadian hair salon or barber? Gym membership? It’s appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, Canadian owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates. Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down the Bucks on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course. There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants — all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn’t the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint.

Remember, folks this isn’t about big National chains — this is about supporting your home town Canadian with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open. How many people couldn’t use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the Canadian working guy? Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services  of a local cleaning lady for a day. My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running. OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes. Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theater. Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of lights, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip. You see, Christmas is no longer about draining Canadian pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about us, encouraging Canadian small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Canadians, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we  couldn’t imagine. THIS is the new Canadian Christmas tradition.

Forward this to everyone on your mailing list — post it to discussion groups — throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in your city — send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations, and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn’t that what Christmas is about?

BUY CANADIAN – BE CANADIAN – The job you save might be your own

In a time where Gluten Free is more than just a buzz word it has become a large majorities new reality. More and more the demand for Gluten free is spreading and people are not settling for the tasteless dry powder like options that are mostly available.

We recently had the opportunity to taste and try O’Delish Gluten Free products at our store and we couldn’t believe THESE were gluten free…where was the powder tasteless cookies we have been sampled over and over?…. O’Delish products are simply amazing and for me I am in love with the single operator LOCAL lady who has turned a need into gourmet!

We are so proud to be partnering with Debbie and the O’Delish product line…products hit the shelves this coming Thursday November 10th…be sure to tell all your GF friends in the area…this is definitely worth trying!!

The Restaurant will also start having a Gluten Free bread as an option for all you breakfast lovers out there :)

Community living

I can hardly believe that summer is already half way over! time just keeps ticking away. Although the weather has not really been cooperating in our neck of the woods the beaches are packed and us West Coasters are determined as ever that we will have a great summer!

We have “old-fashioned” ice cream sandwiches here at the Roadhouse Bake Shoppe & Cheese Market! our Pastry Chefs created a Neapolitan styled cake and frozen Vanilla and Cherry Mousse sandwich which is sure to tantalize your taste buds! they really are delicious and a great way to chill out this summer.

Our bakery and McJac’s Roadhouse Grille Restaurant participated again in our Communities Spirit of the Sea Festival with 2 1977 GMC coaches in the Torchlight Parade. Our staff and our staff’s kids…and some borrowed kids…handed out Salt Water Taffy and a package of 2 of our delicious made with REAL butter cookies! We had so much fun being in the parade and being part of the amazing community that we are fortunate to live in. This West Coast town is one of the most beautiful places to live and we love giving back to those that keep our doors open. Building community is part of our vision statement and being in the parade is a perfect way to connect with that.

As we prepare for Christmas!! yup it’s time for us bakers to put our Santa hats on and get ready for the greatest time of year…. we will continue to put out new and delicious home-made top quality preservative free products into your tummies!! that is a personal guarantee!
